2025 Flood Predictions: Abia Government Launches Statewide Flood Sensitization Campaign

In response to the 2025 flood predictions issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Abia State Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other disaster management stakeholders, is set to commence a statewide flood awareness and sensitization campaign.

The initiative, aimed at mitigating the anticipated impact of flooding, will target several identified high-risk areas across the state. The campaign will involve intensive community engagement and awareness efforts on flood preparedness, proper waste disposal, drainage maintenance, and safe desilting practices.

According to the Ministry, the sensitization visits will begin on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and will cover the following locations:

  • Tuesday, August 5, 2025
    • Ukwa East – 10:00 a.m.
    • Ukwa West – 2:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 6, 2025
    • Aba South – 10:00 a.m.
    • Aba North – 2:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 7, 2025
    • Arochukwu – 10:00 a.m.
  • Monday, August 11, 2025
    • Umuahia South – 10:00 a.m.
    • Umuahia North – 2:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 12, 2025
    • Isiala Ngwa South – 10:00 a.m.
    • Isiala Ngwa North – 2:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 13, 2025
    • Bende – 10:00 a.m.
    • Isuikwuato – 2:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 14, 2025
    • Ikwuano – 11:00 a.m.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, urged residents to actively participate in the campaign and adopt preventive practices to reduce the risks of flooding in their communities. “Prevention is better than cure,” he stated, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in environmental protection.
