Umuahia South is Open for Business: Mayor Touts Security, Economic Growth Under Otti’s Leadership.

From TCNEWS

The Executive Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Hon. Chinedu Enwereuzo, has declared the L.G.A. “open for business,” citing improved security, robust infrastructure, and a revitalized economic strategy as hallmarks of progress under the administration of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti. This was stated during a media briefing held in his Umuahia office on June 12.

Speaking to journalists, Hon. Enwereuzo emphasized that democracy in Nigeria presents an opportunity not just for political freedom but also for deep-seated economic reforms. “Economic freedom is the foundation of true democracy,” he stated, commending Governor Otti’s leadership for implementing bold economic reforms and creating a business-friendly environment in Abia.

Situated in southeastern Nigeria, Umuahia South shares boundaries with Obowo and Mbaise in Imo State, and with Umuahia North, Isiala Ngwa North, and Ikwuano in Abia. The L.G.A. covers approximately 140 square kilometers and is known for its resilience, cultural heritage, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Hon. Enwereuzo highlighted key developments reshaping the local economy, including the revival of transportation infrastructure, particularly areas once bisected by a now-defunct railway line. He noted that Umuahia South is expected to benefit from renewed state and federal government interest in rail transport. As he put it, “Governor Otti has a robust plan for the rail system’s revival.”

On industrial renaissance, the mayor recalled the glory days of the Umuahia Modern Ceramics Industry, now dilapidated, but confirmed that plans are underway to bring it back to life. Additionally, he noted that Umuahia South is rich in kaolin, which is currently being milled, underscoring the L.G.A.’s potential as a light industrial hub.

Enwereuzo also cited the presence of strategic federal institutions, such as the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Nigerian Correctional Service, based in Umuahia South as further reinforcement of the area’s strategic importance.

According to the chairman, security remains the backbone of development. “We have created a safe environment through intentional collaboration with state authorities and community policing,” he said, noting that crime rates have significantly dropped due to proactive surveillance and local engagement strategies.

“The people feel safer, and that confidence is essential for attracting investors and encouraging those in the diaspora to return,” he added.

Enwereuzo appealed to indigenes and non-indigenes alike to join hands in building a prosperous and peaceful Umuahia South. He called on professionals in the diaspora to bring their expertise home, stressing that the L.G.A. is now more stable, secure, and conducive to business than ever before.

“Our people are known for hospitality and innovation. With the current infrastructure improvements and economic direction, Umuahia South is set to become a major economic hub in the region,” he noted.

Marking Nigeria’s evolving democratic journey since 1999, the mayor praised the foundational efforts of the country’s democratic pioneers, both living and deceased. He described democracy as “the best form of government” and lauded the performance of the current Abia State Governor.

“Governor Otti is a visionary who understands how to build a resilient economy. His blueprint is what Abians are proud of. The improved road networks, for instance, are a game-changer, they save time and facilitate commerce.”

Looking ahead, the chairman vowed to maintain the momentum, pledging continued collaboration with the state government to sustain safety, support local enterprises, and create a fertile ground for innovation and legitimate business ventures.

“This is a government that values every resident. We do not segregate; we integrate. Umuahia South is not just surviving, it is thriving,” he further told newsmen.
