Abia State Unveils Major Water and Sanitation Programme to Boost Public Health.

From TCNEWS

The Abia State government will launch the Abia Integrated Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Acceleration Programme (AIWAP) on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in a strategic move to enhance access to clean water and improve sanitation standards across the State.

The initiative, led by the Abia State Ministry of Power and Public Utilities (MOPPU), underscores the administration’s commitment to improving public health infrastructure. The official unveiling will be performed by the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR).

The day’s activities according to the announcement by Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities will include the formal launch of AIWAP at a newly constructed, modern sanitation facility in Okigwe Park, Umuahia, followed by the flag-off of rehabilitation works at the CKC Phase 1 site of the Aba Regional Water Scheme, located at St. Joseph’s College, No. 4 Obohia Road, Aba

The launch of AIWAP is a milestone in Abia State’s efforts to meet growing water demands, promote sanitation, and curb the spread of waterborne diseases. It forms part of the state’s broader development blueprint focused on human capital development, environmental sustainability, and economic revitalization.

By strengthening water infrastructure and expanding hygiene services, the programme aims to benefit both urban and rural communities, improve school and healthcare facility sanitation, and support clean water access across the state.

The rehabilitation of the Aba Regional Water Scheme, once a vital source of potable water, marks a crucial step in restoring reliable water supply to one of the state’s largest commercial centers.

Members of the public, community leaders, stakeholders, and the media are invited to attend. Attendees are advised to be seated ahead of the Governor’s arrival.
