APC Slams Brakes on Kalu’s Otti Visit, Igbo Vanguard Group Weighs In.

From TCNEWS

In a development that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly dissociated itself from a recent high-profile visit by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to Governor Alex Otti, describing the meeting as a personal initiative that does not reflect the party’s stance.

Senator Kalu, who represents Abia North in the Senate and is a former governor of the state, visited Governor Otti of the Labour Party on June 8, 2025. During the meeting, he commended Otti’s leadership and called for support of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. While Kalu framed the visit as a statesmanlike gesture aimed at fostering bipartisan cooperation, the APC sees it differently.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the party’s Acting Publicity Secretary, Sterling Urakpa, the APC accused Kalu of engaging in conduct that borders on anti-party activity. The party argued that Otti’s administration has been marred by “persistent conflicts of interest, lack of transparency, and project cost concealment.” Therefore, the APC contends that any public endorsement of the Labour-led government could mislead constituents and undermine its efforts to hold the administration accountable.

The controversy has ignited a broader conversation around party discipline, political maturity, and the balance between personal diplomacy and institutional loyalty. Critics within the APC argue that Kalu’s actions threaten internal cohesion, especially as political parties begin strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the Igbo Vanguard Group, a sociocultural and advocacy organization, offered a contrasting view. In a statement released shortly after the APC’s rebuke, the group through its President General, Engr. James Nnadozie Uchegbuo, lauded Kalu’s visit as “a commendable act of statesmanship” and criticized the APC’s reaction as narrow and counterproductive.

“The time has come for Nigerian politicians to put development and unity above party lines,” the group said. “Senator Kalu’s visit sends a message of collaboration in governance, and that should be encouraged, not condemned.”

This incident encapsulates a larger dilemma within Nigeria’s evolving democracy: Should political actors prioritize party orthodoxy or the broader goal of good governance? The tension between party loyalty and public service is not new, but it is becoming more pronounced as citizens demand transparency, development, and cross-party cooperation.

Analysts suggest that the APC’s response reflects not just a concern about discipline, but also an internal struggle to project a unified front in the face of growing inter-party engagement. Kalu’s prominence within the party makes the situation especially delicate, with some insiders warning that alienating such figures could deepen factional divides.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the APC’s handling of this controversy could set the tone for its broader strategy in Abia State. The challenge will be maintaining party discipline while avoiding the perception of being hostile to inclusive governance.

This episode also raises questions about the role of elder statesmen in bridging political divides. If bipartisan gestures are routinely punished, observers warn, the political space may become even more polarized, stifling constructive dialogue across Nigeria’s diverse political spectrum.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s meeting with Governor Alex Otti may have lasted only a few hours, but its political aftershocks are reverberating far beyond Abia State. At its core, the episode underscores a critical tension in Nigerian politics, how to harmonize personal influence, party loyalty, and national interest. The APC’s reaction will serve as both a litmus test for its internal unity and a reflection of how far Nigerian democracy has matured in tolerating divergent political interactions for the sake of progress.
