Be the Change: Ohanaeze Youth Council Calls Igbo Youth to Shape Alaigbo’s Future.

From TCNEWS

The Acting State Chairman of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Abia State Chapter, Comrade Eugene Okonta JP, has issued a clarion call to Igbo youths across the state to actively participate in the political and cultural reawakening of Alaigbo by joining the upcoming OYC Convention and Elections scheduled for July 5, 2025, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

In a passionate press statement tagged, “Be Part of the Discussion on How Igboland Should Be Governed,” Comrade Okonta emphasized that the future of the Igbo nation lies in the hands of its youth. He urged all eligible young people to declare interest in positions of their choice ahead of the convention and take up the mantle of leadership in shaping the destiny of Ndigbo.

This call comes at a time of increased youth activism in Nigeria, as young people seek more significant roles in governance and cultural preservation.

“It is exciting that Abia youths are waking up to stir a revolution in Igboland. If you are not part of this discussion, you are not an Igbo youth,” he said.

Okonta criticized those who stand on the sidelines while lamenting the state of affairs in the region. According to him, youth who fail to engage with the Ohanaeze Youth Council lack the moral authority to criticize the actions of external groups, including Fulani herders or government negligence.

“If you’re not an active member of OYC, you’re not a true Igbo. If you have not taken responsibility within OYC, you lack the justification to frown at deadly herdsmen in your community,” he asserted.

Drawing historical inspiration from the legendary Aba Women’s Resistance of 1929, Comrade Okonta challenged youths to emulate the courage and action of Igbo women who resisted colonial oppression.

“They didn’t sit and complain, they mobilized, they acted, and they created change. Igbo youth must do the same now,” he declared.

Comrade Okonta further provided the official contact line for the council: 07030181931, and urged all Igbo youth with a vision for change to “Be a man now and dare the struggle.”
