A total of 101 children born with clubfoot were enrolled and commenced on life-changing treatment across 20 specialized clinics in 11 states under the management of The Straight Child Foundation (TSCF) in July 2025, in a significant stride towards eradicating childhood disability in Nigeria.

During the organization’s monthly briefing held in Umuahia, Abia State, Mr. Bright Amadi, Project Supervisor for TSCF stated that over 70% of the enrolled children are below 12 months of age, aligning with medical recommendations for early intervention to ensure better mobility outcomes and long-term wellness. The treatment programme, which follows the globally endorsed Ponseti method, involves serial casting followed by a minor surgical procedure known as tenotomy.

TSCF’s latest performance indicators reveal an average of five casting visits per child before tenotomy, with approximately 95% of the children undergoing the procedure, a success rate in line with international standards for clubfoot correction.

Despite the achievements, the organization reported moderate dropout rates: about 6% during the casting phase and approximately 11% at the bracing stage. The primary reasons cited include rising transportation costs and other competing domestic challenges faced by caregivers. In response, TSCF is ramping up efforts to trace affected families and provide targeted support to facilitate the children’s return to care.

“We remain deeply committed to reaching more children with quality clubfoot care, regardless of economic or geographic barriers,” the foundation stated.

Clubfoot, a congenital condition that twists the foot downward and inward, can lead to lifelong disability if untreated. Early, accessible, and consistent treatment is critical. TSCF’s work not only restores mobility to affected children but also empowers families and reduces future healthcare burdens. Their efforts symbolize a growing model of effective public-private partnerships in child health in sub-Saharan Africa. 

TSCF also expressed gratitude to MiracleFeet Inc., an international nonprofit supporting the global expansion of clubfoot treatment, for their sustained partnership and resources. The foundation reaffirmed its collaboration with local health facilities, aiming to extend treatment access and strengthen care delivery across the country.
