Uchegbuo Hails Ikwuano’s Historic Victory as Team Clinches 131 Medals at Abia Governor’s Unity Games
In a landmark achievement that electrified the Umuahia Township Stadium, Team Ikwuano emerged as the undisputed champions of the 2nd Abia State Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games, clinching a staggering 131 medals to top the leaderboard among 17 competing local government areas.
The event, held under the auspices of the Abia State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, culminated in a vibrant closing ceremony attended by dignitaries, students, sports scouts, and members of the press. Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba who officially declared the games closed, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to grassroots sports as a tool for youth empowerment and community development.
Reacting to the victory, Engr. James Nnadozie Uchegbuo, Secretary General of the Oboro Council of President Generals and President General of Ahuwa-Oboro Autonomous Community, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the winning team.
“This is not just a medal count. It is a celebration of discipline, preparation, and community pride. Ikwuano’s youth have written their names in gold,” Uchegbuo said.
He commended the athletes, coaches, schools, and local education authority for their outstanding performance and called for sustained investment in youth sports programs as a pathway to societal transformation.
This year’s competition brought together over 1,000 student-athletes from across the state, competing in a variety of disciplines including track and field, football, basketball, volleyball, and more. For many participants, the games served as a launchpad to future athletic careers.
According to Elizabeth Onyeali, spokesperson for the Ministry, the initiative reflects the administration’s larger vision of using sports to enhance education, instill discipline, and foster community unity.
“What we witnessed is the unveiling of a new generation of champions. Sports is no longer extracurricular, it is a developmental tool,” said Sir Nwobilor Ananaba, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development.
