The Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Chinedu Enwereuzo, has commended the exceptional athletes from the area who brought home medals from the 2024 National Sports Festival held in Ogun State and the National Youth Games in Delta State, in a show of civic pride and recognition.

The commendation came during a well-attended civic reception held at the Council Secretariat in Umuahia South, where the medalists were celebrated for their achievements representing Abia State in the Kung-Fu category.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Enwereuzo praised the athletes for their discipline, unity, and commitment, noting that their contributions were instrumental in Abia State’s overall 10th-place finish at the national competition. According to the Director of Sports for Abia State, Comrade Obioma George, Umuahia South produced the highest number of medalists for the state, a feat he described as “historic and inspiring.”

“These young athletes have made Umuahia South proud. Their dedication to the sport and the values they uphold on and off the mat are commendable,” Enwereuzo stated.

He encouraged the team to continue representing the state and the sport with integrity, urging them to be role models and ambassadors of Kung-Fu. He also reaffirmed his administration’s support for grassroots sports development and reiterated the commitment of the Governor Alex Otti-led government to youth empowerment through sporting initiatives.

Among the honorees was Team Captain Warmate Chinomso Nworgu, who not only clinched a bronze medal but also emerged as the Best Performing Athlete in Nigeria at the tournament, a recognition that drew thunderous applause from the audience.
