Speaking through the Secretary of the Conference, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Abiodun Taiwo, at the opening Eucharistic service of the 40th Council of Lay Presidents held at the Methodist Theological Institute, Umuahia, the Prelate delivered a homily titled “Where Now Is the God of Elijah?” based on 2 Kings 2:13–14.

In the message, Dr. Aba likened the relationship between lay Presidents and bishops to that of the prophet Elijah and his successor Elisha, urging the council to adopt a cooperative and supportive approach in Church leadership.

“Lay Presidents must assist bishops to succeed in the ministry and not to fight them,” Rt. Rev. Taiwo said, warning that failure to collaborate could leave the Church without direction.

He encouraged the council to: Develop a healthy succession plan, similar to Elisha’s readiness to inherit Elijah’s mantle; Recognize and uphold God-ordained Church structures, including apostolic succession; Avoid unnecessary movement between congregations when solutions lie within their grasp; and Commit to truth, unity, and fellowship for the collective good of the Church.
